Submit your application to win Family Business of the Year

To enter this award you must be able to answer ‘yes’ to the following 3 questions:

  1. Are the majority of votes owned by the person or persons who established the firm, or those who have acquired the share capital of the firm or who are in the possession of their spouses, parents, child or child’s direct heirs?
  2. Is at least one representative of the family or kin involved in the management or administration of the firm?
  3. Does the person who established or acquired the firm (share capital) or their families or descendants possess 25% of the right to vote as mandated by their share capital?
  • Section 1 does not count towards the total word count. Section 2 MUST NOT exceed 2500 words.  Each question in section 2 carries its own individual word limit.

  • You should cover:
    • The nature of your business
    • Your products and services
    • Your customers
    • Markets that you operate in
  • You should cover:
    • How your sales turnover has developed
    • How your profit has developed
    • Any events that have led to any changes. Please provide an explanation
  • You should cover:
    • Main objectives for the next 3 years
    • How these will be achieved
    • Effects that these will have on the overall business
  • You should cover:
    • An overview of your family values
    • How these values are incorporated into your business
    • How your business has developed in line with these values
  • You should cover:
    • How you balance the involvement of family members with their skillset and those required by the business, whilst operating in the best interests of the business and the family as a whole
    • How you ensure that there is effective decision-making across the family
    • How you facilitate effective ownership of the business
    • Management and ownership issues
    • Conflict resolution
  • You should cover:
    • Your biggest challenges in relation to running a family business and their resolution
    • Provide insight into challenges you can foresee, along with action you may take to address these
  • You should cover:
    • Details of any staff development initiatives
    • How these initiatives are put into practice
    • The impact this has had on your business

The Rules

  1. Awards are open to all businesses based or trading in Wales; all sizes and all sectors.
  2. Entries are treated in confidence but will be shared with a select group of individuals for judging purposes.
  3. All entries must be entered via the website forms.
  4. Any website links used within your entry will not be activated by the judges. Supplementary information may be requested at the time of judging.
  5. Please note the maximum word count for each question. This word count limit does NOT include the questions or the information required in section 1. If your entry exceeds word count it will not be accepted and you will not be notified.
  6. Entrants may be asked for staff or customer testimonials.
  7. Entries will be judged at two stages by an independent and impartial panel of judges. The initial stage will be a shortlisting process, those shortlisted are then put forward to be scored by a panel of judges.  The panels consist of Headline Sponsor, Category Sponsor and SWCC representative.
  8. Award winners will be announced at the Gala Awards Dinner on Thursday 5th March 2020 at City Hall, Cardiff.
  9. Entry to more than one category is encouraged.
  10. Applicants must be authorised to enter their organisation into the awards programme.
  11. Entries need to be in English and typed. All entries must be checked for spelling and grammar.
  12. Incomplete entries will not be judged.
  13. Entry forms will become the property of the South Wales Chamber of Commerce and entries will not be returned.
  14. Proof of sending entry (by email) is not proof of receipt by SWCC or its agents.
  15. The South Wales Chamber of Commerce reserve the right to withdraw an award from any applicant supplying false information within their entry. Judges reserve the right to audit any information supplied.
  16. The closing date for entries is midnight 6th December 2019.
  17. The judges’ decision is final and no further correspondence will be entered into.
  18. No employee of The South Wales Chamber of Commerce shall be entitled to enter.
