Welsh Business Awards – Spotlight on Welsh Hills Bakery

As we countdown to the entry deadline of the Welsh Business Awards 2016, every few weeks we’re going to profile one of the winners from last year’s awards.

Next up, Welsh Hills Bakery, winners of the Success Through Overseas Trade category.

Don’t forget to head over to our awards website, where entries are now open.

Company name: Welsh Hills Bakery

Company overview:  Welsh Hills Bakery, an established bakery for nearly 60 years, started making gluten free cakes and short crust pastry pies in 2001 and was the first to supply two of the UK major supermarket chains with their own brand of gluten free products.

Thirteen years later it is still supplying those same products to them, adding further supermarkets to its customer portfolio.

Award won: Success Through Overseas Trade

Judges comment:  After some considerable discussions the panel judges could not separate the entries of Spear Europe and Welsh Hills Bakery.  Whilst the two companies clearly operate in different markets with very different offerings, the judgement of success in this instance covers differing sizes and length or level of establishment in the market.  They are both worthy of credit and pride.

What has been the impact of winning a Welsh Business Award on your business?

Winning the Success Through Overseas Trade category was definitely one of the highlights for Welsh Hills Bakery in 2016, along with celebrating our 60th birthday and appearing on a national TV advert for Morrisons. We are proud to use the Welsh Business Award winner logo on all of our email signatures.

We’re looking forward to showcasing our export award and our expertise at the forthcoming trip to SIAL Trade Exhibition in Paris, which is one of Europe’s largest export trade shows. We will be exhibiting our Lovemore Free From Food range along with other major Welsh food manufacturers with support of the Welsh Government.

In 2017, we’re looking to build our export business even further and are looking into possible deals with Canada and New Zealand as well as supplying café chains in Wuhan in central China.

Why would you encourage other businesses to enter?

Being shortlisted and winning a Welsh Business Award is a notable accolade to shout about and is a great way of standing out in the burgeoning business world in Wales. The award ceremony itself is a chance to meet like-minded, successful companies all of whom are contributing to Wales’ ongoing growth.
